Quite an important volume in the history of ideas. Slim, but if you fancy reading a modern synthesis, try Daniel Dennett’s not entirely uncontroversial Darwin’s Dangerous Idea.

Gives intellectual grounding to current fascination with algorithms and is thus part of the great war between substance and form which form seems currently to be winning. But it’s the winter of 1943, my friends.
