1. (Finance) A manoeuvre in which a fêted hedge-fund manager’s shorts are yanked up from behind him until they are wedged uncomfortably between his buttocks and then pulled up sharply from behind up over the head, typically as a prank by a bunch of day-traders on Reddit. (Named for Melvin Capital Management LP, the unfortunate fund to which this happened). Also called a short squeeze.
2. (Everyone else) The outcome of unexpectedly yanking a buddy’s underwear up from behind until it is wedged between his buttocks; a “wedgie”.
Nominative determinism to the max, Mr Plotkin.
