1. (Finance) A manoeuvre in which a fêted hedge-fund manager’s shorts are yanked up from behind him until they are wedged uncomfortably between his buttocks and then pulled up sharply from behind up over the head, typically as a prank by a bunch of day-traders on Reddit. Etymology: Named for Melvin Capital Management LP, the unfortunate fund to which this happened). Also called a “shorts squeeze”.
2. (Everyone else) The outcome of unexpectedly yanking a buddy’s underwear up from behind until it is wedged between his buttocks; a “wedgie”. Etymology: Named for the scene in Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, in which Bill and Ted “melvin” the Grim Reaper to escape eternal damnation.
