So is this just is Desperate-Dan, last-stand pattern matching from an aging model staring into forlornly into the abyss?
Being told to acknowledge our obsolescence is an occupational hazard for the JC’s generation, so no change there.
But something about this feels underwhelming. If this is the hill we die on, we’ve let ourselves down.
We shouldn’t let ourselves be suckered by parlour tricks. We should not redraw our own lines to conform with the machines just because that makes it easier for technology to deal with us at scale. The machines are meant to serve us, not vice versa.
Humans are not just carbon-based [[Turing machine]]s who have finally met their match. These are common literary tropes — Frankenstein, 2001, Terminator, Matrix — but they, too, are human narratives. They are cautionary tales. They are deep in the cultural weft, and we are inclined to see them, but the actual quotidian progress of technology has a habit of confounding science fiction.
