Have a plan and tell your team what it is. It doesn't matter if it is a bad plan: it is better to have a bad plan than none at all, because you can improve a bad plan.
A plan gives you a theory of the game, and a focus and a reason for everything you do. If your team knows the plan it can execute independently of you.
A plan also gives you an expectation to measure against: you can judge how well the plan is working. If you are just drifting, you are just — drifting.
