Step 1: look for telltale signs. They are not what you’d think. Search for these words:
- by — indicates a likely passive construction
- or — indicates a laundry list to be shortened, or — ohhhhhh tyhe irony — some kind of option that you could de-clutter
- of — indicates a nominalisation (a compound verb - "effect the execution of" rather than "execute".)
- -ing — indicates a participle, and a compound verb
In a 2,300 word confidentiality agreement (!!) we found 74 participles
