The continental equivalent of the man on the Clapham Omnibus; a fictional chap of Calvinist prudence who enjoys moules frîtes and a weekly tipple with his friend, a netting specialist from a law firm on Avenue J. F. Kennedy, and who invests his savings in definitive, bearer eurobonds.

Every quarter, this fellow journeys in his Citroën 2CV across the border to Luxembourg, whereupon he presents neatly clipped coupons to his issuer’s principal paying agent, collects his interest, takes a cheap flight from Aeroport d’Hercule Poirot to Malaga and promptly decamps on a two-week coke-fueled bender across the Balearic.
