A get-out-of-jail-card which gets a problem off your desk, allows Sales to get on with whatever it is that Sales do, and affords you space to hotly deny you did any such thing when things go tits-up later.

At this stage I would be inclined to have no objections.

An effective strategy because, though no-one likes to publicly admit it, things rarely do go tits-up later — not because of your considered approval, counselor, but because they were never going to go tits-up in the first place.
