Start with: what is design? Generally - Don Tapscott’s The Design of Everyday Things — stuff which might seem obvious but actually takes thinking through.

Look at Who Is The User - it isn't just “the lawyers”, but Sales, Ops, Risk, Finance: once the document is executed, legal isn’t the user, and each of the users has a different need/expectation of the docs — see purpose.
