“Went” is the past participle of the irregular English verb “to go”.
For those curious as to how “go” got to went — well, it wended its way over the ages. Back in the day, the verb “wend” — nowadays, “to make slow and possibly oblique progress in a certain direction” — just meant to “go”. The past participle of wend was went. Somewhere along the way, go appropriated went, and “wend” had to make do with “wended”.
