“Mad-house” Columbina Cavalier was, for forty years, St. Crustard’s Defence Against Indemnities teacher. Experienced in all kinds of indemnities, reimbursement covenants and miscellaneous holds harmless, Cavaliertaught at St Crustard’s well into her eighties, becoming increasingly frequently forgetful and prone to inappropriate outbursts has her career progressed. At the time of her disappearance she was widely regarded by management as a crusty old malcontent and a dope fiend, but the children respected her for her practical experience, war stories and frequent brusque dismissal of fashionable management technique. Cavalier would often depart the classroom during recess to toot medicinal opium — she needed to, she claimed, to alleviate the chronic pain of the injuries she sustained at the Battle of Bretton Woods.
