The slash ( / ), also known as the virgule, has several uses, most of which (sayeth the [www.thepunctuationguide.com/slash. punctuation guide]) should be avoided in formal writing.

Never, ever, employ it to mean “or”. If you need to convey the expression, use it. Never, ever, ever use the expression and/or.
