A kind of grandiose forensic throat clearing that adds precisely nothing legally, conversationally or even grammatically to a sentence, and can safely be excised in every case: the sentence will function in exactly the same way without this expression.For what is the activity of appending your name to the bottom of a passage of text for, if not to acknowledge its contents?

In other words: I have signed, therefore I acknowledge. This corresponds to the faintly Cartesian insight offered by that wonderful[1] Latin maxim animadverto ergo scio: “I am paying attention, therefore I know”.
